menu planning…thanksgiving style

Tis the season…Thanksgiving is just days away and it is time to make the menu.  Oh wait…I do not even have to plan a menu…it is already done!  Passed down from year to year from the hubby’s side of the family.  We have been hosting for the past several years and the menu never changes.  I once tried to introduce the family to my favorite baked acorn squash with plenty of butter and brown sugar…but was quickly rebuked for the missing sweet potatoes.  The following year, I dug out the marshmallows and topped the sweet potatoes and left my squash at the farmer’s market.

This year…I am bringing back the squash!  To add to the dinner…not to replace!  I am also ready to enlighten the family with REAL stuffing…we have been eating Stovetop for TOO LONG!  So…if you have a great family recipe for a delicious stuffing…please send it!!

Thanksgiving Day Menu

  • turkey
  • mashed potatoes & gravy
  • green bean casserole
  • corn
  • dinner rolls
  • cranberry sauce (straight from the can)
  • sweet potato casserole…complete with brown sugar and marshmallows
  • acorn squash
  • pies for dessert…pumpkin, pecan and apple with real whipped cream

Please…help me out and send stuffing recipes!  🙂

  1. ok, here’s the stuffing recipe i’ve had for about 40 years now…it’s always been made by my grandmother on my dad’s side, she’s now an 87 year old farm woman living by herself in southeastern MN…the strongest most ambitious woman i know. here you go….
cook 1/2 c. chopped onions and 1 c. chopped celery in 1/2 c. butter until tender. Add the following to this and bring to a boil: 1 – 13 oz can cream style corn, 1 c. water, 1 tsp. pepper, 1 1/2 tsp. sage. Pour over 1 – 8 oz package pepperidge farm dressing mix, if seasoned use less sage. add 2 beaten eggs, mix well. form into balls – use an ice cream scoop, makes about 18 – 20 balls. place into a 9×13 cake pan. pour over 1/2 c. melted butter. bake (?) – no directions here…maybe it says on the pepperidge farm box how long to bake and at what temp???? typical recipe from gma, never complete ’cause she always says “grandma doesn’t follow a recipe”. good luck.

    • Thanks Jod! Sounds like a family fav! I will let you know…got a couple of options! I love that your sweet 87 year old gma has a tradition like this…gotta love a legacy like great family recipes!

  2. Jenna & I have tried homemade stuffing with different recipes and we always get “this isn’t bad… can we go back to Stovetop next year – lol” – I like the idea of “adding to” versus replacing. I think it is that Norwegian – North Dakotan palate that is so hard for us to compete with – my folks grew up with very simple/pure home-cooking (where ketchup was the spiciest thing on the table). I will stick with from scratch pies and bread rolls when the family is in town…. I did get a recipe for a homemade cranberry sauce that I am going to introduce, talk about living on the edge!!! Have a great holiday Sara…. I took today off to greet my family who was coming in at 2:00 – how great is a 5 day weekend!!!
