I had the opportunity to hang out with some of my favorite teenagers yesterday at the Girls of Grace. It had been a reaaaaallllllyyyy long week at work with some crazy, difficult situations….so I was in need of a little refueling and inspiration. The day was filled with encouragement and challenging speakers on topics like dating (waiting for steak “a real Godly man” and not settling for beef jerkey “the childish dude that doesn’t know how to treat a lady”), fashion (dressing classy-not trashy; and knowing what message your fashion sense is saying,) self-esteem and body image (you are MORE than a number) and so much more. There was great music by Point of Grace, Meredith Andrews, for King & Country, and Britt Nicole.
And in the midst of all that, there was inspiration for me…a 40+ year old woman. 🙂
Chris Wheeler…the lone dude speaker at the event, challenged the girls as a “big brother” in their dating decisions earlier in the day, and then came back out to speak truth about the point of life. He challenged all of us with a reminder that the purpose of life for Believers is to to reflect the image of God….to Glorify God in all that we do…that faith without action is dead (James 2:17.) Wow. Humbling. In the midst of my crazy week, I just know there were times that I was not very reflective of His image. My own selfish desires impaired the view of a loving God that I long to portray.
Annie Downs…another fab speaker that spoke the truth, reminded us about the power of our words. Ephesians 4:29 states : “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” And yet, we seem to live in a world filled with whining, complaining, grumbling and talking poorly of others….we often lash out at others with NO consideration for their feelings. And we cannot take those words back. We have the power to pour life into others with encouragement and kindness. Our words matter.
The conference ended with an opportunity to place our beautiful truth in a little message in a bottle to wear as a reminder of what we have learned…I will cherish these words and aspire to live the life God has in place for me.
(p.s. Check out my fashionable belt, wrapped around a sweater! Just a little take-away tip I learned during the fashion show! Ha!)
