bargain books

The signs have been out indicating the closing sale at Borders for the past few weeks.  Not that I usually buy much there (having a kindle), it is still kinda sad that another business is closing it’s doors.  Since the signs said 80-90% off, we pulled in today.

As we were walking in, I told Bob that the only book I am really looking for is Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder “the true story of a gifted man-Dr. Paul Farmer-who loves the world and has set out to do all he can to cure it.”  I had read it years ago as a borrowed book from my mom.  I have been wanting to reread it after having been to Haiti this summer…and…what do you know?  It was there! One of the few remaining on the last few shelves still standing in the store.  And I got it for $1.80.

So…I kept looking and found…

…another by Tracy Kidder Strength in What Remains “the story of one man’s inspiring American journey and of the ordinary people who helped him, providing brilliant testament to the power of second chances.  Deo arrives in the US from Burundi in search of a new life.” (for $1.60)

..and Outcasts United by Warren St. John “An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference” (for $3)

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah “At the age of twelve, Ishmael Beah fled attacking rebels in Sierra Leone and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence….This is an extraordinary and mesmerizing account, told with real lierary force and heartbreaking honesty.” (for $1.20)

…screenwriter and movie director Nora Ephron’s (famous for Julie and Julia, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail) second book, I Remember Nothing and Other Reflections “filled with insights and observations that instantly ring true.” (hardcover for $2.29)

…and a little fiction Simply from Scratch by Alicia Bessette  “…a radiant celebration of friendship and the strength of the human spirit.” (hardcover for $2.59)

Now I just need to make a little time to read!  🙂
